A new commission piece has been posted! This one was a one-off, and in yet another way, a departure from my usual formula. In an interesting twist, it’s a departure in that it’s a lot more to-the-point than my usual pieces are. It still takes around 800 words to get to the sex, but then it basically doesn’t stop, and for me, that’s a new muscle to flex.
A lot of erotica writers are used to writing over 80% sex in a story. In fact, I’d bet a lot of them wouldn’t know how to do it any other way. I was more of an aspiring writer that happened to fall into the erotica-writing world by accident, even though it seems that the opposite is more common. I’m more used to the idea of building up and establishing relationships, although a lot of people are explicitly not reading erotica for that, which is respectable.
I think a big part of why I write predominantly narrative-focused erotica is that I can’t help myself. My weakness as a writer is that I feel the need to add details, possibly unnecessary ones, about a particular relationship or character. As a reader recently pointed out to me, this doesn’t extend to descriptions, and they constructively suggested that I tend to under-describe the physical qualities of something. It was likely good and needed advice to give. I care a lot about how people see each other, but not a lot about what people see. I care a lot about what leads up to the sex, but less so about the sex itself. Erotica should be antithetical to my writing.
This makes me niche, and if you really appreciate the relationship-based approach, odds are you like the niche and not a lot of writers scratch that itch. A lot of writers that care about relationships have an ego (like myself, no doubt) and want to write “real” books. So truly relationship-based erotica is, shall we say, rarer than one would like.
So, for a challenge to write more sex and less plot, a solution formed when a commissioner made a request for a story where someone has sex with a spirit: make there be no relationship. Both characters can’t really talk (at least not for long) and basically both parties see the other as consenting sex toys. It was a fun experiment.
The fact that the spirit represented something unreal also meant exploring other kinks ethically. The commissioner originally wanted the spirit to take on a, shall we say, different-than-human shape, and the compromise we reached was that the spirit’s penis at one point takes on a different shape, and the medium is into it purely for the shape factor. It’s both possible to include in the story and a way to write such an occurrence without going beyond my own boundaries.
To that point, I try not to enforce my boundaries often, but I’m realizing that I’m not as “KINKY kinky” as a lot of writers out there. I’ve made compromises with a good few commissioners, and that’s not to cast judgment on those who commission stories. If anything, this might be a wake-up call for me to assess some of my writing limits and ask what truly draws an ethical line. That said, I’m not likely to write either incest or bestiality anytime soon, if ever.
I hope you enjoy the piece! It tries out a few things, and I think a few people will appreciate its direction. I got a very positive reaction from my beta readers, though I know one of them just wanted me to write more mosterfucking for a while (a kink I previously set a harder boundary on). As well, I’m grateful to you all for the slight uptick in support, both on the Patreon front as well as commissions. Not only am I still on track to release a regular chapter this month, but the uptick in revenue means I can feasibly work on erotica more in the coming month. That’s awesome, and I have commissioners and Patrons to thank. Thank you very much, and I’ll talk to you next week.
