[New Chapter Posted!] Spinning Wheels

Week14

Two freaking months of waiting. Truly, I do not deserve you all. The latest chapter of The Good, The Bad and the Molly is now out, for your viewing pleasure. I hope you enjoy it, I actually enjoyed writing this one, which has been nice.

I sometimes receive the criticism that the actual sex of my sex stories takes up like 10% of the story (though in this chapter, it sits at around 25%, so hey, if that is a valid criticism at least I’m improving). Part of this is because of my love of the story and the buildup, and to that end I will say, bad news for anyone who hopes I ever write a story where sex happens on the first page and continues happening every three pages – your odds are grim. That said, there’s a good chance that there’s a good criticism for me to note within this more vague criticism, one I’m noticing a lot as I write GBM – spinning my wheels.

What I mean by this is, there are certain moments in my stories where events don’t happen. Sure, sometimes I take whole pages out of my stories to talk about school dances or encounters at sandwich shops or whatever, but those are still events, things the characters do. Sometimes I just embellish pages with angst and inner monologue, and effectively just reinforce how a character already is. The past two chapters of The Good, the Bad and the Molly are definite victims of this, as Aaron has a lot of angst and sometimes his inner monologues take up a lot of space in a chapter. His negative emotions sometimes take a lot of page space to unpack, which I find interesting. Again, I’m more of a spectator than a puppeteer to my characters, and sometimes they end up surprising me with what they say or do. Aaron is definitely fun and interesting to write in some ways, but in others he’s frustrating, and sometimes having to unpack all of the things it feels necessary to relay from inside his head just makes it feel like I’m filling pages with nothing but self-doubt you already know he has.

I honestly don’t know what the solution to this is. Editing, I guess. I can’t make myself write differently, it needs to just spill out of my head in a certain way. I’m also kind of crap at editing, especially self-editing, but I’m working on that currently. I am always trying to improve my writing in one way or another, so that it’s more enjoyable to you all. In time, I’m going to try to phase out spinning my wheels in a story as much as I can. Inner monologues can be fun sometimes, but they can also bog down the stories, and I need to find a nicer balance. I’d rather write about events anyway, whether they be sex-based or not. Even conversational monologues are fun, but I’ll get into that topic next week. For now, enjoy the chapter. I’ll talk to you all next week.
