Writing Non-Consensual Sex Sucks

Week15

I did not enjoy writing most of the first eight chapters of The Good, The Bad and the Molly.

I didn’t know this fact myself until I wrote chapter nine and got to write characters having sex and enjoying it again. Even though there was angst and anguish, the sex was consensual and I could write, once again, about characters reacting to one another. Lord above, maybe that’s what sex is, an interaction.

I mean, I guess you can write a sex story about a girl masturbating, but even then odds are the majority of stories like that are about what and who she’s fantasizing about or maybe even her masturbating in public. Sex is, at its core, about interaction. It’s about two (or more, if you want) people sharing something. The hottest part about sex stories, a lot of the time, is how attracted to each other the people having sex are, and how eagerly they want more. Consensual sex is a blast to write because even if you’re not good at being wordy, just showing that the girl in question is moaning the boy’s name can make some readers go, “Woah, that’s awesome, I hope that happens to me someday,” or something.

Writing non-consensual sex sucks for basically the same reason writing consensual sex is fun. Firstly, it’s non-consensual, so most likely You’re writing about an unfortunate event that one party either hates or doesn’t know is happening, so that’s already a bummer to write about. Secondly, there’s no mutual eagerness you can spin, no real talk of the interaction unless your character is delusional. Thirdly, there’s the knowledge that either your viewers also don’t like what’s happening, or the knowledge that they do really like it, and you don’t really know how to feel about that either way. I’ve spoken about rape fetishes and writing rape before in previous blog posts (‘Are Rape Fantasies Okay’ is a good place to start if you want to read those) so I won’t harp on that too much here. Suffice it to say, writing sex that isn’t fully reciprocated is weird and not all that fun.

Still, that’s the way the story played out, that’s how I have to write it. Luckily that portion of the story is over, and I can go back to writing about the interaction between the two characters, is the bedroom and otherwise. I hope you all are enjoying where the story is taking you, and if not, don’t worry, it’s closer to the end than the beginning. I’d love to say when the next chapter is out, but I honestly don’t know, given life just hitting me with everything it has right now. For the record, I’m in a better place than I was a few weeks ago, and I’d like to thank all of you for your support, both now and at that point. It means a lot. I’ll talk to you all next week.
